Top Ancient Travel Destinations to Visit in Rome



If we talked about ancient civilization, one city that would come up in my list is the city of Rome. The city of Rome began its civilization as early as the 8th century BC, thus the part of the city with remnants of the ancient century is called Ancient Rome. The city is the capital of Italy with a population of over 2.8 million and a land mass of 1, 285.3 km2. It is considered one of the largest and the most populated city in Italy and much like the rest of the country, Rome is predominantly Roman Catholic and is long been the important center of religion and pilgrimage.  

The city of Rome with its long history of civilization is no wonder known for its rich cultural heritage with dated centuries ago and is until now noticeable in the city’s architecture and structures from parks, fountains, gardens, statues, obelisks, bridges and catacombs. 


The city is also full of ancient historical sites to visit which makes it one of the most visited places in Italy, such ancient sites to see in Rome include the following: 


Early Churches

Rome being the important center of religion and an ancient city in Italy is known for its various early churches. Few of these churches includes Basilica di San Clemente, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, Basilica of Saint John Lateran, Old St. Peter’s Basilica San Sebastiano fuori le mura, San Pietro in Vincoli, Santa Costanza, Santa Pudenziana and Santa Sabina.

Wall of Romulus

Wall of Romulus is another ancient structure in the city of Rome. It is a wall that was built to protect the Palatine Hill – the center most of the Seven Hills of Rome in one of the oldest parts of the city. In ancient tradition, it was believe that the wall was built by Romulus who happens to be the twin brother to Remus and according to history both brothers are the central characters of Rome’s foundation myth.

The Flavian Amphitheater (The Colosseum)

Also known as the Colosseum, this ancient structure is still one of the most beautiful sites that you can see in the city despite the fact that it has fallen into ruin. The Flavian Amphitheater has been standing since 80AD which was built on the site of an artificial lake that happens to be part of Nero’s huge park in the centre of Rome. It also includes the Golden House (Domus Aurea) and the nearby Colossus statue.

Another ancient site that you want to visit when in Rome is the Tiber Island. The island is of the two islands in the Tiber River which runs through Rome. It is a boat shaped island that is located in the southern end of the Tiber River which is approximately 270m long and 67m wide. The island is connected with bridges to both sides of the river which linked it to the rest of Rome since antiquity and was once called Insula Inter-Duos-Pontes which means “The Island between the Two Bridges”.

Casal Rotondo is an ancient tomb that is located approximately 6th mile of the ancient Appian Way, to the southeast of Rome, Italy. The mausoleum’s name comes from the fact that it is round and it has a middle age farmhouse (casale) built on top of it which served as watch towers along the Appian Way. This ancient structure was built first around 30BC. It is built in a large circular building with 35m in diameter and decorated with frieze and a coned roof. Its base comes with seats where travelling visitors could rest.
